It was quite a turnout - The Woodford Folk
Festival Programme Launch always is. It was
the 31st such event in our organisation’s

Amanda Jackes, the evening was filled with
an atmosphere enhanced by so many people
making an effort to dress in the space theme.
It was a comic sort of a night which always
comes quiet when the programme features and
performers are announced.
There wasn’t the usual oohs and ahs
as Head of Programming, Chloe Goodyear
announced the myriad of names featured at
this year’s event but people were awed by her
articulate speech which so well captured the
great spirit of not just the programme but how
it was put together.
The night opened with an emotional
welcome by Custodian Noel Blair, followed on
Bill Hauritz delivering his prepared speech.
President Rose Broe invited Immediate
Past President Des Ritchie to join her for the
final curtain on the programme book’s release.

The Programme Book is the organisational

times of artists and presenters. It features
bus timetables, sponsors, food venues, layout
maps, bus routes, parking and traffic plans.
The book guides everyone in the organisation
from deliveries to security planning. It forms
the centrepiece of the festival’s Marketing
Plan and a PR document used to demonstrate
the organisation’s work along with an archive
that best captures the collective output of the
central function of Woodfordia.

change in the organisational culture moving

Nick Warfield (pictured right) creates art from junk, scouring our

Nick became enchanted with Woodford on his first visit with his

astounded that a festival of such a scale can still uphold solid
principles of community, folklore and participation as well as honour
and nourish the creative community” said Nick.
With this in mind Nick presented his portfolio to Organisers last
year, with a will to simply contribute as an artist and found his fit
with the crew of Bill’s Bar. Those in attendance may remember Nick’s
birds gracing the flowers behind the bar.
Earlier this year, Organisers invited Nick to meet with them and
submit a proposal to spruce up the Blues Bar area.
“After the meeting I went for a walk on site down to the Blues
Stage area to see if the beautiful land that is Woodfordia would
offer up any inspiration and magic for me to connect with. I sat by
the creek that runs right past the Blues Bar area and listened and
watched and sat still. I heard the bee’s wriggling in native blossoms,
saw a green tree snake slither through the undergrowth and watched
bubbles of the Native Terrapins rise to the surface of the gold tannin
creek. All of a sudden a flash of the brightest lapis lazuli blue darted
across my view and rested on a log that lay half submerged across
the creek. It was an Azure Kingfisher! Giving me a sign - a magical
gift of inspiration. Birds are the main theme that I explore in my work
so a chance encounter is a big deal in my world” said Nick.
The Azure Kingfisher’s inspiration came to fruition. Old car parts,
mainly brightly coloured bumper bars, have been transformed into
three larger than life native birds, who will perch and watch some
fine blues tunes and if you’re lucky you might even see a Kingfisher.

Aiming to reduce cash handling, faster bar
transactions, refunds on unspent monies and
more efficient tracking of stock, organisers
have introduced the digital dollar at the
Woodford Folk Festival’s outlets this year.
The system RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification) is an electronic trading system
where currency, via cash or debit cards can be
uploaded onto the festival wristbands.
Patrons will be issued the wristbands as
part of the usual entry process, this year with
an inbuilt microchip.
Patrons will then be able to upload their
funds into the chip at The Currency Exchange.
There will be a surcharge of $3.50 only to
activate the chip.

Shop, Festival Eftpos, General Store, Garland
Bar, La Grande Bar and Bills Bar.
All bars will be cashless, along with
Beerwah Water, Ice at General Store, Festival
Shop and General Store and participating stalls
will accept a combination of RFID, cash and
People should note that this is a cash
management system only, no personal
information is stored on the chip.
Users can check their cash balance on their
chip at any purchase location.
In response to patrons leaving the festival
with un redeemed drink tickets in their
pockets, refunds are available at the ‘Festival
Eftpos Booth’ tent next to Infology between
8am-3:30am for any unused funds. Refunds
cannot be processed in any other location.
Day guests will need to keep in mind that they
must process their refunds prior to leaving the
precinct on their ticketed day.
This new system will remove the wastage
of thousands of paper drink tickets, along
with the frustration of lost and unused tickets.
It will help reduce bar lines as well as being
a convenient way to keep your cash on your
wrist and manage your budget.
Should the system prove successful as it
has been elsewhere, thoughts of spreading to
all retail and food outlets at the festival could
ensue in the future.
Ultimately, a fairer system of concession
fess for stall holders could be based on
turnover rather than a flat fee which can be
construed as favouring the big over the small.
